Author Island.com Interview
1.Tell me what your first book is about?
In Privy to Murder, Tali Cates, a single mother, moves back to Love,Texas. Her life becomes complicated by murders and an angry ghost who seems to think she should be able to solve the mystery. It will be released October 7th by Eternalpress.com.au.
2.What makes a sane person like yourself decide to write a book?
I’ve been an enthusiastic reader since I was in the third grade and realized I could read any book in the library if I wanted to. I want others to get the same pleasure out of what I write.
3.Finishing a book is not an easy task, what are your writing habits?
I work full time so my writing happens at night or on my lunch hour and weekends. I found if I post my daily word count goal on my blog I’m more likely to meet it. Since my schedule is hit and miss some times, a really good chapter outline helps a lot.
4.Tell me about how you broke into the business?
I belonged to an internet group of writers and when one of them shared a market with me, I submitted Privy and it was accepted so quickly my head swam.
5.How long did it take you to write your book?
I began writing Privy about three and a half years ago. When my husband died, I stopped writing for a while, then decided I’d better get with it. That’s when I set myself an achievable goal of 600 words a day, five days a week. It worked. I finished the first draft and my book will be released October 7, 2007.
6.What’s your secret to success?
Persistence, networking and the willingness to be willing to write anything, even Infection control textbooks.
7.What’s your best advice to other authors who are just getting started?
Find great critique partners and a good writer’s critique group, one that leaves all egos at the door and gives constructive criticism. Plus, edit, edit and edit.
8.Which writers have influenced you?
I grew up reading Nancy Drew, Agatha Christie and all the Science Fiction by Ray Bradberry. I loved fantasy and paranormal stories. Now I love the Kim Harrison novels, Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, Hillerman and Elizabeth Peters. Read what you write.
9.Do you have any weird hobbies?
Bird watching, painting pastel portraits, once in a while playing the hammered dulcimer.
10.What’s next for you as an author?
I’ve started the sequel to “Privy to Murder” called “Bloody Murder.” I finished a middle grade fantasy, “Agatha Ann and the Spider Wizard.” Which is with a publishing house for evaluation. I have a story “Chimes in the Snow,” coming out in the “Chichen Soup for the Nurses Soul:2nd Dose” that will come out in November. My short horror story will come out in World of Myth’s Anthology soon.
Well, I can see there's no chance of you slowing down anytime soon. I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming releases and thanks for dropping by the Island!

Carol Shenold joined AuthorIsland.com just before the release of her first novel, a mystery called PRIVY TO MURDER , and I couldn't be more happy for her. She took a minute out of her very busy schedule to tell us a little bit about herself.
Thanks so much for talking with us, Carol.
No problem. Very happy to be here at the Island, even if it is only cyberly.
